Roy and Tom Gamlin, who designed the Rolypig, and I share a passion for the natural environment. We believe in the importance of optimizing our use of natural resources in all that we do. We are continually amazed at the strength of the natural systems around us and want to do everything we can to work in concert with Mother Nature to perpetuate the health of planet Earth.
The Rolypig story
The Rolypig Composter has been in development for over five years. In short it is a fun and functional way of bringing composting to millions of people. If you have green kitchen waste, paper towels, coffee grounds and filters, you could be producing award winning compost.
SAVE BILLIONS
Did you know about half of our deposits to our landfills could be recycled or made into compost? And if we were successful in achieving this reachable and honorable goal, we would save half the cost of our present waste disposal? Imagine half the fuel costs, half the labor costs, half the space used. Over not too much time, this would be a savings of billions of dollars and much space.
Attractive Composting
Making the home composting job an attractive one for everyone was a prerequisite to having any success on a wide scale. The Rolypig composter achieved this. It is cute, functional, easy to use, and keeps unwanted pests away from veggie waste.
ENJOYABLE COMPOSTING
The amiable Rolypig is fun to use for all; especially for children. My son Matthew, who is 8, genuinely enjoys feeding our Rolypig, almost as if Rolypig is a real pet. This is quite a change from Matt's attitude to taking the kitchen waste and coffee grounds and filter out to the previous compost bin. When I asked Matthew what was the difference between before Rolypig and now? He said, " Now it's fun." You and your children of all ages will feel the same.
unique FEATURES - THE SCREW DESIGN
The screw design was the first essential feature and appeared in the first model which was called the OCTOPOD. The screw design allows for continuous flow of green waste and simultaneous aeration for accelerating the breakdown of the waste. This patent pending design provides for separate compartments which prevents new waste mixing with older waste. Most importantly, the screw design made Rolypig unique by getting away from the "batch system." Rolypig is continuous and always ready for another meal.
Unique Features - ROLYPIG'S SNOUT
The second ingenious feature is Rolypig's head. Lifting the snout presented an inclined chute for green waste to flow into the composter. And at the same time achieved the goal of keeping pests out and smells in.
UNIQUE FEATURES - DECOPOD
Octopod was difficult to roll. So rather than have eight sides, ten sides were planned for the next prototype. Ten sides made it much easier to roll and still enabled the user to index the rolling position.
UNIQUE FEATURES - REAR BUCKET
While I find the head and the screw design the compelling features, Roy thinks the rear bucket is the best design feature. The rear bucket accepts up to 12.5 liters of finished compost. The rear bucket fits snuggly so it stays in place when the Rolypig is rolled or moved. Its snug fit also serves to keep pests out and odors in.
OPTIMAL SIZE
The only other aspect which needed to be sorted out was the size so that Rolypig could be handled by everyone. When empty the pig weighs only 29 pounds. Rolypig stands 32" high, is 43" long, and is 31" wide.
STRONG, DURABLE, QUALITY
Years of testing the strength of plastic sheets in various forms and the realization that the original two-part welded plastic construction was not going to be any good for transport led to the panel and aluminum rail construction of Rolypig.
The amazing skill of our fiberglass people and the execution of our design at our manufacturing site completed the project for us. We feel that in combining a very effective continuous flow system inside with an appealing image outside is quite an achievement. We hope you feel the same.
